First Tomato Unboxing

Written by Chris on May 21st, 2011

Cut into the “Black Krim” I harvested the other night. Fully ripened.  Was tasty.  But I’m not sure it’s a Black Krim, after checking some images online.  No “black” in this tomato at all.  Mystery tomato.

Red, not Black :)

First 2011 Tomato

Harvested a partially ripe Black Krim tonight.  Decided I’d better get it before some varmint did.  Weighs in at 7.25 oz.

First 2011 Cucumber

First Earthbox Spacemaster Cucumber harvested today, weighing in at 12oz.  Also got another Black Beauty Zucchini.  Black Beauty is proving to be quite vigorous–growing much faster than the other squash I planted.

First 2011 Squash

Written by Chris on April 30th, 2011

First Earthbox squash picked today.  Black Beauty zucchini weighing in at 280g.  I fear my squash may not be long for this world, however, as the other day I spotted the dreaded squash vine borer moth buzzing around the plants, depositing its eggs of death all over the squash stems.  I tried to scrape off the eggs I did see, but I will not be surprised to see my squash shriveling up in a matter of weeks.

5/1 update–picked one more black beauty 169g and first dixie yellow at 190g.

Tomatoes in Ground (some)

Written by Chris on March 26th, 2011

Got the garden ready for tomatoes.  Info:

Central soil area of garden measures 19′ x 2′

Added 2 1.5 cu. ft. bags of Ladybug Revitalizer Compost, 1 1.5 cu. ft. bag of Farm Style Compost.  8 lb. dolomite.  2lb 10oz of GardenTone organic fertilizer.  Planted three tomatoes (the rest not quite big enough yet, plus we have a bit of a cold snap coming this week): from south to north: Black Krim, Bush Early Girl, Paul Robeson.

Update 4/9: planted the remaining tomatoes.  Had to deviate from original plans because the plants I grew from seed were just too small to plant (I planted the seeds to late), so rounded up some interesting varieties from the nurseries.  So completing the bed from south to north are Lemon Boy, Orange Oxheart, Black Prince and Sweet 100 Cherry.
