Squash Ready / Squash Concerns

Written by Chris on May 1st, 2010

Finally got some pollination going and a few squash are plumping up. Should be ready tomorrow I imagine.

Multipik About Ready

Concerned about what looks to be some powdery mildew perhaps forming on the 8 Ball squash. The other squash do not show signs of it. But that’s what destroyed all my squash last fall. It will spread if it gets worse. Need to see if it’s something I need to treat, asap!

What is that powdery mildew and how do you keep it away?

Another quick questions about bougainvilleas–are yours blooming? Mine are not and I am not sure why? Please help.

Thin the plants out asap- remove afflicted leaves, even if it’s a lot of them.

Make a tea of cornmeal, chamomile, and cloves: boil a handful of cloves and a handful of chamomile flowers in 1 qt of water for 30min. Turn off heat, add 1/2 cup cornmeal. Let sit until cool; strain and spray on the plant and every plant around it. If you happen to have neem oil around, add a generous tablespoon to the spray bottle as well. SPRAY UNDERSIDES TOO!

Thanks for the info Paul. I’m starting to think that perhaps it is a false alarm, and the pattern is a normal part of that squash varieties’ leaves. I have seen more pronounced types of patterns like this on zucchini squash leaves, but for some reason what I’m seeing on this plant seemed more….powdery looking. Going to keep an eye on it.
