Earthbox Squash at Week Two

Written by Chris on March 27th, 2010

Squash is progressing much more slowly than it did in the fall garden, perhaps due to the chilly night temps. The crappy Miracle Gro Potting Mix might also be a contributing factor. It seems much less fluffy than the Hi Yield mix I used last time (Red Barn Nursery, where I used to get the Hi Yield, does not seem to carry it now) and it may not be wicking the water up as efficiently as the Hi Yield mix did.

Have you checked out some of the organic potting soils and soil mixes carried at Natural Gardener?

The Earthbox has very specific requirements for the type of mix you use. Has to be soil-less. So a lot of the organic stuff that contains compost etc is not so good. They are too heavy and don’t wick the water up from the bottom as well. At least that’s what I have read. I do use organic fertilizer though!

  3. I’ve had problems with sowing seed directly into sub-irrigated planters. Every time I do I get substandard results. I get better results from putting seedlings with a couple of sets of real leaves into my DIY SIPs.

Your earthbox looks good. What other varieties did you consider?
